YouTube has a feature to block mature and potentially dangerous content to keep the platform safe for minors. This Restricted Mode feature of YouTube allows parents or network admins to block videos and channels that are harmful to minors.

What is YouTube Restricted Mode? What are the benefits?

To better understand the YouTube Restricted Mode feature, you first need to know what types of content are allowed to be uploaded to the platform. After creating a YouTube channel, a creator has to make sure that his published content adheres to certain guidelines and is suitable for all types of YouTube audiences. This means that no “sexual, hateful, or dangerous content” can be uploaded to YouTube. Also prohibited on video platforms that contain bad language or adult themes.

Videos that violate YouTube’s rules, such as the YouTube Community Guidelines, are demonetized, blocked, and even permanently deleted. These decisions are made through manual review or AI screening. Even if a video complies with these guidelines, if there is anything suspicious in the video, it will still fall under Restricted Mode.

This restricted content can only be viewed by signed adult YouTube users. Restricted videos are usually not found by searching and are deleted after review. You will no longer see this type of restricted video if your account has Restricted mode enabled.

Rules for turning on YouTube restricted mode on the computer

The restricted mode can only be disabled using a signed Google Account. This feature is automatically enabled on Google Accounts that are under 18 years of age by date of birth. This feature cannot be disabled unless you are 18 years old.

In addition to blocking video viewing, there is also a feature to comment on those videos. If you are over 18, you can turn off this setting by entering Google Settings. This feature cannot be turned off unless the age set in the account is more than 18 years.

To turn on or off YouTube Restricted Mode from any computer, access YouTube from the browser. If you are not signed in then sign in. Then click on the profile icon in the top right corner.

Then click on the “Restricted Mode: Off” option from the displayed menu. Then turn on the toggle next to “ACTIVATE RESTRICTED MODE” and Restricted Mode will be turned on. Similarly, the restricted mode can be turned off by turning off this toggle.

If you want to turn on Permanently Restricted Mode for that browser, after turning on Restricted Mode, enter the same menu again, then select the “Lock Restricted Mode on this browser” option. Similarly, by selecting the “Unlock restricted mode on this browser” option from the same option, the lock of restricted mode can be opened.

Rules for turning on YouTube Restricted Mode on Mobile

Android

• Log in to the YouTube app and click on the profile icon in the top right corner
• Select the Settings option from the Account menu
• From the Settings menu, tap General Options
• Then tap on the Restricted Mode slider to turn Restricted Mode on or off

If the slider is gray, then Restricted mode is off. And if the slider is blue, it means Restricted mode is on. These settings will only apply to that device. This means that if you login to another device with the same account, the restricted mode settings will not remain the same.

IPhone / iPad

• Sign in to your Google Account by accessing the YouTube app for iPhone or iPad
• Then tap on the profile icon in the top right corner
• Select Settings and enter the app’s Settings menu
• Then use the slider next to the option to turn Restricted Mode on or off

The gray slider means restricted mode off and the blue slider means restricted mode on iPhone or iPad like Android.
