The world is going digital. Every country in the world has a touch of digital technology. In all cases, the digital system is being used to replace the traditional method. Following this, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has expressed her determination to transform the country into a digital Bangladesh by 2022 and the government is working tirelessly to build this digital Bangladesh. One of the steps toward building this digital Bangladesh is the launch of Bangladesh’s satellite into space. Named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of our nation, Bangabandhu Satellite-1. Which has written the name of a small state called Bangladesh in space as a result of long efforts. Which, as responsible citizens of Bangladesh, we get a lot. With this, Bangladesh has become the 57th satellite launcher in the world.

Bangabandhu Satellite Launch Journey:

The launch of Bangabandhu Satellite began in 2008 with the formation of a committee on the construction of artificial satellites by the Bangladesh Telecommunications Corporation BTRC. This is where the journey begins to make dreams come true. Subsequently, the issue of launching a state-of-the-art satellite was added to the National Information Technology Policy of Bangladesh in 2009. The International Telecommunication Unit was contacted to launch Bangladesh’s own artificial satellite and to design the Bangabandhu-1 satellite. In March 2012, US-based Space Partnership International was hired as the project’s lead consultant. Bangladesh entered into an agreement with Thales Alenia Space, a French satellite manufacturer, to buy the Bangabandhu-1 satellite, and BTRC, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of Bangladesh, signed an agreement with them for Tk 19.51 billion. An agreement was reached in 2015 with the Russian satellite company Interest Boutique for the purchase of orbital slots. And in 2017, an organization called Bangladesh Communication Satellite Company Limited was formed for the overall management of the satellite.

The construction cost of Bangabandhu Satellite:

At the ECNEC meeting in September 2014, Tk 968 crore was allocated for the operation of telecommunication services through satellite launch. 315.51 crore was allocated from the own funds of the Government of Bangladesh and the assistance of Bidder’s Financing was taken to raise the remaining Tk. In September 2016, with HSBC, the government took a loan of Tk 1,400 crore at 1.51 percent interest, which has to be repaid in a total of 20 installments over 12 years.

Bangabandhu Satellite-1 is the first artificial satellite in Bangladesh which is located 35,600 kilometers above the earth’s surface. This is a satellite of geostationary Earth orbit. It is basically a geostationary satellite. It is a geostationary satellite that orbits the earth once every 24 hours along the equator and it will orbit the earth in the opposite direction of rotation, that is, it will rotate from west to east. For this reason, the Bangabandhu satellite will be fixed in the same place. The term of Bangabandhu Satellite is 15 years. Bangabandhu will receive the information sent from the satellite ground station and multiply it and send it back to the earth. The weight of Bangabandhu Satellite is 3600 kg which is to be found in Bangladesh’s own orbital slot at 69 degrees and 103 degrees east longitude. The International Telecommunication Union of Bangladesh applied to the ITU in 2006 for the allocation of 102 degrees east longitude orbit in Bangladesh space. But different countries of the world objected to allocating this orbital slot to Bangladesh. Later, the consulting firm advised Bangladesh to allocate 89 degrees east longitude. They said that this will ensure the best use of the signal received from the Bangabandhu satellite. Later, due to obstruction, the allocation of orbital slots from Singapore and Malaysia and 69 from Bangladesh was canceled. Later, the Russian company Intersputnik International Organization of Space Communications expressed interest in selling 119.1 degree east longitude orbital slots. The Bangladesh Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) signed a 15-year agreement with BTRC Internet, which can be extended up to 45 years in three installments. The agreement was signed on January 15, 2015.

Bangabandhu Satellite has a total of 40 transponders. Which has a capacity of 1600 MHz. Of these, 26 are Ku-bands and 14 are C-bands. The KU Band extends to Bangladesh, Bay of Bengal, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and many more countries including the Philippines, Myanmar, and the C Band extends to 26 more countries.

We no longer have to depend on different countries for information technology. Because we can control these ourselves through Bangabandhu Satellite. We also have a lot of satellite TV in our country. They had to pay a certain amount of money to receive services from foreign satellite companies. This money was spent to buy the frequencies of the TV channels. But now with the creation of Bangabandhu Satellite, all these television channels have been transferred to Bangabandhu Satellite. Earlier, foreign companies had to pay huge sums of money every year. Which also affected the economic side of our country. But at present, instead of our country’s money going to other countries, Bangladesh will be able to earn income by providing services to other countries.

It is also possible to earn a lot of foreign exchange by providing services to these satellite foreign companies. Through this, it is possible to make a profit by removing all the costs of making a satellite. But we must be patient because nothing can be gained from the beginning. However, new aspects of income are being unveiled from Bangabandhu Satellite. These are expected to increase further in the future.

It is possible to improve the quality of this service in Bangladesh through satellite. All the benefits of telemedicine, video conferencing, defense, and disaster management will be available through satellite. It will also be possible to ensure an uninterrupted internet connection. There are many remote areas of Bangladesh that have not yet gotten the touch of modernity and internet connections and mobile networks have not been reached. It is possible to provide a mobile network and internet connection through Bangabandhu Satellite. In addition, various weather messages can be collected through Bangabandhu Satellite. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department will now be able to collect the forecasts of natural disasters like cyclones, tidal surges, etc. on its own.

Above all, Bangabandhu Satellite is a blessing for Bangladesh and one of the most effective steps toward building a digital Bangladesh is to build a satellite for the country. As a result, the pace of development of our country has accelerated and Bangladesh is moving towards the same trend as one of the developing countries of the world. On the one hand, this is paving the way for the financial prosperity of our country and on the other hand, the image of Bangladesh is also getting brighter at the international level. Because before Bangladesh, a total of 56 countries in the world have succeeded in launching satellites. Bangladesh is the 57th satellite launcher in the history of the world.
