For the first time in six years, the iPhone maker has returned to the position of top smartphone seller in the country.

Apple Corps accounted for 23 percent of China’s smartphone market in the last quarter of 2021, up from 16 percent a year earlier, according to another research firm, Canalys. And with the success of the Chinese market, Apple has regained the position of the top smartphone seller in the world market.

According to research institutes, Apple has been able to overtake Samsung, the top competitor in the smartphone market, during the last three months of the year, including Christmas and other festive holidays. At the time, Apple accounted for 22 percent of the global market, and Samsung accounted for 20 percent.

However, due to the chip crisis, Apple’s production has decreased a lot compared to other years. Sales of Apple products are usually higher in the last three months of the year. Apple unveils new products in September each year, showing off new flagship devices. After that, the devices made their debut in the market.

Apple has received an unexpected response in the Chinese market right after the unveiling of the iPhone 13, said Meng Meng Zhang, an analyst at Counterpoint Research.

However, he added that Huawei had an indirect role behind Apple’s success. Huawei’s business has been hit hard by various US government sanctions, with the supply of vital parts being cut off and Huawei’s manufacturing system damaged.

Considering the whole of 2021, Apple is in third place in the list of the most smartphone sellers in the Chinese market. In the first and second place are Vivo and Apo. Each of the three companies holds about one-fifth of the market. Meanwhile, competition is heating up as Samsung prepares for a big smartphone launch next month.
